Thank you for your comment, and yes, the damn thing made $1 billion dollars, so I guess it was impactful, and it was watched by millions, and some of them, like you, must have liked it. It’s alright, we’re all entitled to our own opinions. I will continue to critisize Burton and his adaptation, as it’s my opinion, and this is my blog. YH

Hello Susan,
From your description, it sounds like you have a unique edition, that i’m not familiar with. The torn title page will make it unattractive for most collectors, so i’d guesstimate that its value would be in the range of $15-$30, but it’s just a guess. See if you can find a similiar copy in ebay or abes books. YH

The page with the date of publishing has been torn out. It has a green hard cover, a colour picture of Alice and a rat in a room filled with water inside the front cover but the book rest is in black and white. Is the book of value to someone? Susan

Thank you Stephen, good point, and I agree, the texts portray a dark and dangerous world, espacially Wonderland and Oz, where little girls are by themselves surrounded by insane adults (some are ouragiousely violent).
Please take my anti-Alice film adaptations rant with a spoon of salt. It was mainly a vehicle for me to voice my healthy hate for Burton’s take. I do appreciate Svankmajer’s work, it is art in its fullest. It’s just that on a sheer entertainment level, it makes for a hard watch (as any avant garde creation is, I suppose), unless thats your thing.

The whole concept of Alice in Wonderland is avante-garde. High weirdness, which is why Return to Oz (1985) is my favorite Oz presentation. Read enough of those books & you realize it’s a dangerous not paradisical world.

I found a shorter series with numbers in the mid-500’s and they were dated 1939. Then I found a couple of isolated books in the 400 series and the books were dated in the listing (not on the books) as from the 20’s. So, I as my set includes the Alice in Wonderland book you feature above, I would date it to the 1920’s not 1930’s. I was struck. as you were, by the disorganization of the illustrations to the text as well as the lack of attribution of the Alice in Wonderland story to its actual author. The illustrator WAS given a reasonable not as it appears on every cover so that did seem sufficient. These reminded me of the Little Golden Books that proliferated in the 1950’s and were sold in markets (that puts them into a lesser category than “bookstore” books. I know they were there as I really annoyed my mom for BEGGING to buy one every time we entered the market. She usually broke down! Now I am speaking only from memory (and that might be faulty) but they didn’t always give proper credit to authors either and it seems to be a “TYPE” of book. The Bobbsey Twin books listed Hope as the author but I think (again, this is a memory….maybe not accurate….that Hope was a name on the book but they might have been written by any one of a bunch of authors working on them. So, things were a bit loosey-goosey in the past. I think the Gabriel Fairytale Books just purchased have an above average level of skill in their version of each fairy tale and the illustrator (Gordon Robinson) was excellent. These qualities make me very happy to have found these 7 books (3 more unrelated books were in the box, too but I am only speaking about the fairy stories) and, they are luckily quite new-looking for their age. They were donated to a thrift store near me and I paid $60 for them and the research included by the store put the online price at $75.00. Thought these comments might be of interest to you. I found YOUR comments interesting. Cate

He did more than one ALIW, which reflected the different periods of their creation.

Apologies for the late response. Thank you for writing. It’s such an honor to be related to the great Walter Hawes!
I love your great-grandfather’s Alice edition. Could you please share basic details about him, when he was born, where did he live, where did he study, when did he pass away.
What are other published works of his? Are any of the original Alice illustrations he made still in the family?
Thank you!

Dear Joel, Yes, well, I’m ok with an edition withough the DW and in a good condition, and am keeping a regular eye out in ebay for a copy, but, they are either over $500, or with issues (tears, scribbles on covers, etc.). One of these days, ill find one thats right for me. I like that, like in Looking Glass’s Sheep and Wool episode, where Alice reaches for items that disappear from her, there are editions that are always seemingly reachable but manage to evade me.

Hi,
Is your book with Milo Winter’s illustrations? In any case, I would never recommend to separate illustrations from a book, unless it’s in a horrid condition (left outside to rot for ten winters, and then half eaten by a bear), only in such a case would the Gods be ok with such a suggestion, otherwise, a serious collector would go for only a complete book with all the illustrations

Hi Rebecca,
On one hand taking out pages from a book should be a punishable crime. however, I have come across many shabby and tattered Alice’s that using them solely for framing their illustration makes all the sense in the world. Yes that random cover. I always think some publisher just had the plates ready or something and thought, yeah what the hell. They wouldnt mind.

I have recently collected the Alice in Wonderland above 1928 Harry Rountree and have discovered a discrepancy in the illustrations contents page. All the 4 other colour plates are on different pages to the ones listed. The contents says page 65 for the first one and mine is on 55; 80 is on 70; 97 is on 87; 112 is on 102. Have you come across this before? We love to hear from you regarding this anomaly. Regards Dianne
